ROOTS OF THE CONGA ORIENTAL WORKSHOP

This song, dance, and percussion workshop is an immersive exploration of the vibrant rhythms, movements, and cultural heritage of Guantánamo, the Eastern most province of Cuba.

The Conga Oriental musical tradition emerged in the 19th century, evolving from African rhythms and festive celebrations brought to Cuba by enslaved peoples—particularly influenced by the Haitian migration to the eastern region of the island.

This workshop series offer a rare opportunity to learn rhythms from a part of Cuba that is not normally taught!

SAN LAZARO CELEBRATION 2025

December 13, 2025
11am - 6pm
Berkeley Finnish Hall

1970 Chestnut St., Berkeley

San Lázaro, associated with both Lazarus of Bethany in Christianity and Babalú in Afro-Cuban Santería, is a significant figure in eastern Cuba’s cultural and religious practices.

Celebrating San Lázaro helps preserve Afro-Cuban traditions, blending Catholic and Yoruba beliefs while fostering community unity through communal rituals and gatherings. The saint is seen as a protector and healer, with his feast day being a time to seek blessings, particularly for the sick and poor.

The celebrations will include performances, workshops, and ceremonies.

More details about this year's celebration coming soon. Check out the video below of last year's celebration.
